Tamsulosin Trial for Agitation in Dementia

Even a small degree of urinary retention can contribute to nocturnal agitation.

Many older men have undiagnosed benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). People with dementia often cannot verbalize what they are sensing in their bodies. It is up to us to puzzle out what their behavior is communicating.  We have found that the addition of tamsulosin is effective in many of our male patients in reducing night-time agitation and wandering even when their bladder scans show only mild or modest retention.
