Music Therapy Month
As March marks Music Therapy month, we are thrilled to spotlight the transformative power of therapeutic music at Hospice of the Northwest. Thanks to the generosity of our donors who support the Hospice of the Northwest Foundation, therapeutic music is offered as part of our Integrative Services, providing essential comfort to our hospice patients.
Therapeutic music goes beyond mere entertainment; it eases physical, emotional, and spiritual pain. Hospice patients find comfort in hearing their favorite song or hymnal, joy in singing along, and relief as the music transports them to a more peaceful place.
Communication Beyond Words
April Mitchell, a dedicated harpist and one of our two therapeutic musicians, finds deep fulfillment in her role. “This line of work is powerful,” Mitchell shares. “Music can be one of the best communicators in times when we have no words.”
April’s journey with therapeutic music began during her college internship, where she discovered her life’s calling in bringing solace through melodies. “The moments I share with patients and their families are sacred,” she reflects. “I’m continually in awe of the profound impact music has, especially in the delicate transition at the end of life.”
Having personally experienced the support of hospice care at a young age when her father was ill, April understands the significance of these services firsthand. “Hospice has come full circle in my life,” she shares. “It was there for me when I needed it most, and now I have the privilege of being there for others during their most vulnerable moments. It’s a beautiful alignment.”
At Hospice of the Northwest, we believe in the profound impact of therapeutic music in enhancing the quality of life for our patients. Through the support of our donors and the dedication of musicians like April Mitchell, we continue to provide compassionate care that honors the healing harmony of music. If you or a loved one would like to explore the therapeutic benefits of music during your hospice journey, please reach out to us. Together, let’s celebrate the gift of music and its ability to bring peace and solace during life’s most challenging times.
